Stories For Kids Bible: Moses and the Ten Commandments

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a baby named Moses. His story is one of bravery, faith, and the power of standing up for what is right. This is a tale from the Bible that has inspired people for thousands of years, and it’s a perfect story to share with kids to teach them about courage, wisdom, and the importance of following a higher purpose.

Moses was born during a time when the Israelites were living under the rule of the Egyptian Pharaoh. The Pharaoh was afraid that the Israelites would grow too strong, so he ordered all baby boys to be killed. Moses’ mother, Jochebed, loved her baby very much and didn’t want to lose him. So, she made a clever plan. She wove a basket out of reeds, placed Moses inside, and set it afloat on the Nile River. She hoped that someone kind would find him and take care of him.

As Moses floated down the river, he was discovered by the Pharaoh’s daughter. She felt compassion for the baby and decided to raise him as her own. Moses grew up in the palace, learning the ways of the Egyptians. But even though he lived among them, he never forgot his true heritage and the struggles of his people.

When Moses became a man, he saw an Egyptian mistreating one of his fellow Israelites. Moses knew that this was wrong, so he stood up for his people and killed the Egyptian. This act made him a fugitive, and he had to flee to the land of Midian. There, he met a kind priest named Jethro and married his daughter, Zipporah. Moses lived a quiet life as a shepherd, but his heart was always with his people.

One day, while tending his flock, Moses saw something extraordinary. A bush was burning with flames, but it didn’t turn to ashes. Curious, Moses approached the bush, and he heard a voice calling to him. It was the voice of God. God told Moses that He had seen the suffering of the Israelites and wanted Moses to lead them out of Egypt to a promised land where they could be free.

Moses was scared. He didn’t think he was strong enough or brave enough to face the mighty Pharaoh. But God promised to be with him and gave him signs to show the Pharaoh that He was real. With a heavy heart but a strong sense of purpose, Moses returned to Egypt.

When Moses and his brother Aaron went to the Pharaoh, they asked him to let the Israelites go. But the Pharaoh’s heart was hard, and he refused. This led to a series of events known as the plagues, where God showed His power over Egypt. Each time the Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go, another plague would strike. Finally, after the tenth plague, the Pharaoh agreed to let them go.

Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, and they were pursued by the Egyptian army. But God parted the Red Sea, allowing the Israelites to cross safely while the waters closed over the pursuing army. It was a miraculous escape, and the people rejoiced in their newfound freedom.

After leaving Egypt, Moses led the Israelites to Mount Sinai. It was there that God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. These commandments were not just rules; they were a guide for living a good and righteous life. They taught the Israelites how to love God and how to treat each other with respect and kindness.

The Ten Commandments are as follows:

You shall have no other gods before me.

You shall not make for yourself an idol.

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

Honor your father and your mother.

You shall not murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

You shall not covet.

These commandments are timeless and still hold valuable lessons for us today. They remind us to be honest, kind, and respectful, and to always put God first in our lives.

Moses’ journey was not easy. He faced many challenges and hardships, but he never gave up. His faith in God and his determination to lead his people to freedom are an inspiration to us all. Moses’ story teaches us that even when things seem impossible, with faith and courage, we can overcome any obstacle.
